I went to Newfoundland in the late 1970s and traveled from village to village along the great western and northern shores of the island. At that time, young men faced a difficult choice: become a fisherman like their father and grandfather before them or leave their home and way of life to find work in Newfoundland's one large city or on the mainland. Despite a life of hard, manual work in hazardous conditions for those who stayed, I found that the bonds of shared work, family, and community remained strong.
